Considerations When Selecting a Style for Your Tiling

Posted on

Making a choice on what tiles to select for your home can be quite intimidating. This is due to the wide assortment of options that you could choose from in an array of materials, colours, textures and more. Simply picking tiles based on their pricing will not guarantee you longevity. Moreover, your choice of tiles should not simply be appealing but they should also be functional for their specific applications. Below are some of the considerations to keep in mind when selecting the style for your tiling.

Consider the installation location

The first thing that you need to bear in mind before making a decision on which tiles would be suitable for you would be where you intend to have the tiles located. For instance, if you are seeking new tiles for areas exposed to high moisture content such as the bathroom or the kitchen, you need to ensure your tiles are water resistant. Porous tiles installed in this environment will have the propensity of harbouring bacteria and breeding mould over time, making the space a health hazard.

On the other hand, if you are installing the tiles as flooring, you may want to consider tiles that come with natural anti-slip resistance such as natural stone tiles. The traction these tiles provide will decrease the risk of accidents, especially when the tiles are wet.

Lastly, if you are installing the tiles in heavy traffic areas, you need to consider impact resistant and scratch resistant tiles. These would be able to withstand the high traffic without succumbing to disrepair.

Consider the colour of the tiles

Your choice of tile colour will have a significant impact on the overall ambience of the room. This is especially true if the tiles are taking up a significant amount of visual space. If you are looking to make the room appear warmer, you may want to consider darker tiles in shades of burgundy, chocolate and more. However, these tiles should only be used in open spaces since they can overwhelm a small room and make it appear smaller than it really is.

On the other hand, if you would like to create the illusion of space, you should opt for lighter coloured tiles. Tiles in pastels such as cream and peach have the ability to make a space seem brighter and airier than it really is.

Lastly, if you would like to make a room appear more vibrant, you should consider bright solid colours such as yellow, green or orange.
