Common Plumbing Problems and When to Seek Assistance

Posted on

Almost every homeowner owns a few necessary tools to help them deal with plumbing emergencies. If you're handy around the house, you can deal with small repairs such as replacing a worn out washer or changing a drain cover. However, some plumbing jobs are a bit too tasking and one needs to know when to seek assistance from a professional. This article is going to look at some of the common plumbing problems people experience in their everyday lives and help differentiate between the do-it-yourself jobs from the ones you need assistance.

Common Pluming Fixing Jobs

Even the most comprehensive regular maintenance won't prevent the occasional leak in households. Most of these common problems have equally common solutions.

Dripping Faucet

If you have ever tried falling asleep with the sound of a dripping faucet echoing in the next room, then you know how irritating this common problem can get. In addition, a dripping faucet also escalates your water bill higher every second the problem goes unresolved. The problem is usually caused by faulty or worn out washers that allow tiny drops of water to pass through the pipes despite the pipes being closed.  Such a problem can be resolved by simply replacing the washer using ordinary home tools.

Blocked Drains

This is another common plumbing problem that majority home owners face. Drainage clogs are usually caused by debris, most often food remnants, that get stuck in the pipes preventing water from flowing steadily through the drains. In most cases, a reliable plunger, a common tool found in most households can fix the problem by exerting air pressure to dislodge the clog. Another solution would be using commercial drain cleaners which can be found in your local super market. However, these clog removers can cause damage to some materials in your pipes if used too frequently. If you experience clogs too often, then it's probably best you seek a professional.

Leaky Pipes

Leaky pipes can be a costly nuisance and that is why companies that produce commercial joint fillers are thriving so well in sales all over. It is one of the most common problems in many households brought about by ageing and worn out sinks. Repairing leaky pipes is not a complex affair but it can be messy and only offers a temporary solution to the problem. For a more permanent solution such as replacing a pipe, one would require professional assistance.

When to Seek Assistance from a Professional Plumber

All these common problems can be easily tackled from the comfort of your home without spending a dime on a plumber. However, there are more serious and complicated issues that require assistance from a professional. For example, you need a professional plumber when installing a sink or fixing new pipes. Water heater problems require the help of a professional as it can be hazardous. Another common problem that you shouldn't tackle alone is repairing septic tank leaks. It is a dangerous job that without the proper equipment or expertise can be hazardous to one's health.
